Damaged or not working?
Tell us within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you. You don't need to send back a broken item unless we ask.
Recalls
If it's recalled, you'll hear from us.
We follow recall notices from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for home products and from NHTSA for car equipment.
- Bought it here? If it's recalled, we'll email you what to do: a fix, a replacement or a refund.
- Registration cards: if there's one in the box, fill it in. It's how the maker reaches you directly.
- Check anything you own, wherever you bought it: CPSC recalls for home and nursery products, NHTSA recalls for cars, car seats and tires.
Testing & replacing
Safety gear needs a calendar.
An alarm with a dead battery protects no one. Here's what to check, and when. Fire safety experts suggest the day the clocks change as an easy twice-a-year reminder.
-
Every month
- Press the test button on every smoke and CO alarm.
- Check that the extinguisher gauge needle is in the green.
- Make sure gates, locks and latches still hold firmly.
- Test door, window and pool alarms.
-
Twice a year
- When the clocks change: restock first aid kits at home and in the car.
- Practice your fire escape plan, with two ways out of every room.
- Check the car kit: flashlight, flares and blankets.
- Recharge the jump starter (every three months is better).
-
Every year
- Replace batteries in any alarm without a sealed battery.
- Check life jackets still fit: children go by weight, not age.
- Walk through each room at your child's height again.
- Check car seat expiry dates, usually stamped on the shell.
-
Time to replace
- Smoke alarms: 10 years from the date on the back.
- CO alarms: on the maker's schedule, usually 7 to 10 years.
- Extinguishers: after any use, or when the gauge leaves the green.
- Gates and locks: when your child can climb or open them.
Based on guidance from the NFPA. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your product.
Questions

Ask a questionChoosing the right products
How do you choose what to sell?
Slowly. Every product has to pass our Family First Standard. It must meet the safety standard that applies to it, be easy for adults and hard for kids, install without a contractor, be built to last and look right in a real home. If we wouldn't use it with our own family, we don't sell it.
Are your products certified?
Wherever a safety standard exists, we require it. For example: UL listings for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, ASTM and JPMA certification for baby gates, and U.S. Coast Guard approval for life jackets. Each product page lists the certifications that apply.
I'm overwhelmed. What should I buy first?
Start with the Family First Five: smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, a fire extinguisher and fire blanket, a first aid kit, and a car emergency kit. Then take the 2-minute Safety Check, and we'll build a room-by-room list for your family's stage.
When should I start childproofing?
Before your baby is on the move, ideally around 6 months, before crawling starts. Get down on your hands and knees and look at each room from their height. You'll spot things you'd never notice standing up. Our Crawler Kit covers the essentials.
Which baby gate do I need?
At the top of the stairs, always use a hardware-mounted gate that screws into the wall. A pressure-mounted gate can be pushed loose. Pressure-mounted gates are great for doorways and the bottom of the stairs. Not sure? Send us a photo of your stairs and we'll recommend one.
Are your products renter-friendly?
Many are. Look for the No-drill badge: those products install with adhesive, tension or straps and come off cleanly. See every no-drill product.
Do you sell car seats?
Not right now. Car seats are best chosen and fitted in person, so we focus on crash-tested accessories. Nearly half of car seats are used or installed incorrectly, so we recommend having yours checked by a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. It's often free, and NHTSA's inspection locator can help you find one.
Will a window breaker work in my car?
It depends on your glass. Window breakers work on tempered glass, which shatters into small pieces. Many newer cars use laminated glass in the side windows, which is designed to stay in one piece, and a window breaker won't get through it. Check the small label in the corner of each window, or your owner's manual, and plan your way out. The seat belt cutter works in any car.
How often should I replace safety gear?
Smoke alarms: every 10 years (check the date on the back). CO alarms: on the manufacturer's schedule, typically every 7 to 10 years. Fire extinguishers: check the gauge monthly and follow the service date. First aid kits: check twice a year and replace anything used or expired. Gates and locks: check monthly, and move up as your child grows.
Orders, shipping and returns
Where do you ship, and how long does it take?
We ship across the contiguous U.S. Orders leave within 1–2 business days and usually arrive within 3–7 business days. Shipping is free on orders over $75.
What's your return policy?
You can return unused items in their original packaging within 30 days for a full refund. For hygiene and safety reasons, we can't take back opened first aid supplies or adhesive items that have been installed, unless they're faulty. How to start a return.
What if something arrives damaged or doesn't work?
Tell us within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you. You don't need to send back a broken item unless we ask.
Is checkout secure?
This preview store doesn't take payments. You can walk through checkout, but no card details are collected and nothing is charged or shipped.
Help and support
Do you install products?
We don't offer in-home installation. Every product comes with a plain-English quick-start card, and most installs take minutes. Hardwired alarms should be installed by a licensed electrician.
Can you help me choose?
Yes. Send us a message. A photo of your stairs, cabinets or back seat helps, and a real person will reply with recommendations.
What happens if a product I bought is recalled?
We follow recalls from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and NHTSA. If something you bought from us is recalled, we'll email you with what to do, whether that's a fix, a replacement or a refund.
Is Safety's R Us an emergency service?
No, we're a shop. In an emergency, call 911. For a possible poisoning, contact Poison Help, which is free, confidential and open 24/7.
