About us

We say no to most of what we see.

Safety's R Us is an online shop of home and car safety products for families. It's small on purpose: 50 products and 11 kits, each one chosen the same way. Here's who we are, how we choose, and how to read the labels yourself.

Family First

Every product in this shop passed seven checks before it got here.

If we wouldn't use it with our own family, it isn't for sale.

The Family First Standard

Our story

Shopping for safety shouldn't be a guess.

Most families shop for safety gear twice: once in a rush before the baby comes, and again after a scare.

Both times the choice looks the same. Thousands of near-identical listings, brands nobody has heard of, and five-star reviews for gates and locks that were never tested against anything. Parents end up guessing, about the things they least want to guess about.

We started Safety's R Us to take the guessing out. The shop is a short list: products that meet the safety standard that applies to them, that we'd fit in our own homes and cars, and that come with instructions a tired parent can follow at 11 p.m.

Family First is our name for how we decide. Not the cheapest option, and not the one with the most features: the one we'd choose for our own family.

How we choose

Six steps to the shelf.

Every product in the shop went through these steps, in this order. Most of what we look at stops at step two or three.

  1. Start with a real worry

Every product starts as a question families ask: how do I stop the dresser tipping? What goes in the trunk for winter? If nobody needs it, we don't go looking for it.

  2. Check the standard

If a safety standard applies, the product has to meet it, and we look up the listing or certificate rather than trusting the box. Where no standard exists, the bar is how it's built and how it holds up.

  3. Fit it ourselves

We install it the way you would: with the hardware in the box and the instructions as written. If it needs a contractor, a second trip to the store or a lot of patience, it's out.

  4. Try to beat it

Then we try to open it like a determined toddler would, and like a busy adult with a baby on one hip would. Child-resistant has to stay resistant, and easy for adults has to stay easy.

  5. Write it up plainly

What it does, what it doesn't, who it's for and how to fit it, in plain English. If we can't explain it simply, we don't stock it.

  6. Keep watching

Once it's on the shelf, we keep checking CPSC and NHTSA recall notices. If something you bought is recalled, you hear it from us, with what to do next.

Safety labels, explained

Read the box like we do.

These are the marks we look for before anything goes on the shelf. Learn them once and they'll help you anywhere you shop, not just here.

No mark at all? Some products, like corner guards or cord wind-ups, have no safety standard. For those, we judge how they're made and how they hold up, and we say so on the product page.

The Family First Promise

Five promises, in plain English.

What you can hold us to, and what each promise means in practice.

  1. We only sell what we'd use with our own family.

That's the whole test, and it's stricter than it sounds. It rules out most of what's sold online.

  2. We'll tell you what something does, and what it doesn't.

Every product page has a “Good to know” note: the window breaker that can't get through laminated glass, the gate that must never go at the top of the stairs.

  3. We'll tell you when you don't need something.

The Safety Check gives you a short list for this week, this month and later. “Nothing else for now” is a real answer.

  4. If a product you bought is recalled, you'll hear it from us.

We follow CPSC and NHTSA recall notices, and we'll email you what to do: a fix, a replacement or a refund.

  5. If something's wrong, we'll make it right.

Unused items come back within 30 days. Damaged or faulty? Tell us, and we'll replace it or refund you.
