Two places. One promise.

Your family spends most of its time in two places: at home and on the road. We've hand-picked what matters in both.

Start here

If you do five things, do these.

Every family's list is different. These five belong on all of them. Tick what you already have, and we'll show you what's left.

All five, one box

Family First Starter Kit $379

Two smoke + CO alarms, an extinguisher, a fire blanket, first aid kits for home and car, and a roadside kit.

  1. Round white smoke and carbon monoxide alarm with a small green status light

    Smoke alarms on every level

Put one inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every floor. Test them monthly and replace them every 10 years.

    10-Year Smoke + CO Alarm $59

  2. White plug-in carbon monoxide alarm with a small display

    Carbon monoxide alarms

CO has no color and no smell, so an alarm is the only way to know it's there. Put one outside each sleeping area and on every level, especially if you have gas appliances or an attached garage.

Plug-In CO Alarm with Display $45

  3. Red home fire extinguisher beside its black wall bracket

A fire extinguisher and a fire blanket

Keep an extinguisher on every floor and one near the kitchen, with a fire blanket by the stove. Learn P.A.S.S. (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) before you need it. Extinguishers are for small fires only: if in doubt, get out and call 911.

Home Fire Extinguisher (ABC) $69Kitchen Fire Blanket $34

  4. Open white first aid case with neatly organized bandages and supplies

A first aid kit you can find in the dark

Keep one at home and one in the car, and make sure everyone knows where they are. Check both twice a year.

Family First Aid Kit $64Glovebox First Aid Kit $39

  5. Open roadside emergency bag with jumper cables, a red warning triangle, a flashlight and gloves

    A car emergency kit

It needs a light, warning triangles, first aid, a blanket and a way to jump-start the battery, plus a seat belt cutter the driver can reach.

    Roadside Emergency Kit $119

Home Safety

Room by room, the way you really live.

Every room has its own hazards. Pick a room to see what matters there, and what we'd put in it. It's the same house you saw at the top of the page.

Floor plan of a two-story family home: kitchen, living room, stairs, garage and backyard downstairs; nursery, bathroom and two bedrooms upstairs GROUND FLOOR UPSTAIRS UP DN

Tap a room on the plan. Numbers mark what to watch for.

Ground floor

Kitchen

The heart of the home, and the room with the most within reach.

Watch for numbered on the plan

  1. Hot stovetops and ovens
  2. Sharp drawers
  3. Cleaners under the sink
  4. Grease fires
Tip

Never put water on a grease fire. Turn off the heat and smother it with a lid or a fire blanket.

Car & Travel Safety

Mile by mile, ready for anything.

A safe trip starts before you turn the key. Pick a trip to see what belongs in your car. Watch the signs light up as the headlights pass.

The school run

Short drives, busy mornings, little passengers.

Tip

Make “look before you lock” a habit. Put your bag or phone in the back seat so you always check.

Question 1 of 6
Who's at home?

Choose all that apply.

How it works

Safety, simplified.

Four steps from “where do I even start?” to a home and car you don't have to worry about.

  1. Tell us about your family

Take the 2-minute Safety Check, or browse by room, trip or kit.

  2. Get a short list, not a long catalog

We recommend what matters for your home and car, and tell you what you can skip.

  3. Unbox, install, done

Every product ships with a plain-English quick-start card. Most installs take minutes.

  4. Stay protected

Opt in to reminders to test alarms, check kits and update gear as your kids grow.

What to expect when you order

  1. Right away

An order confirmation with your receipt, plus your checklist if you took the Safety Check.

  2. 1–2 business days

Your order ships, carefully packed, with tracking.

  3. 3–7 business days

Delivery anywhere in the contiguous U.S., free on orders over $75.

  4. In the box

Minimal, recyclable packaging and a quick-start card for every product: where it goes, how to fit it, how to test it.

  5. If it's not right

Unused items can be returned within 30 days. Damaged or faulty? We'll make it right.

  6. For years after

Optional reminders to test alarms, refresh first aid kits and replace gear on time.

How we choose

Every product earns its place.

Big marketplaces list thousands of look-alike gates, locks and alarms, with no easy way to tell which meet safety standards. We do that homework for you, and we say no to most of what we see.

Inspection tag

The Family First Standard

  1. It meets the standard that applies

UL-listed smoke and CO alarms. ASTM- and JPMA-certified gates. U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets. If a standard exists, we require it.

  2. It's easy for adults and hard for kids

    Child-resistant shouldn't mean parent-proof.

  3. You can install it yourself

Clear instructions and the right hardware in the box. No contractor needed, hardwired alarms excepted.

  4. It's built to last

Sturdy materials that hold up to years of daily use and determined toddlers.

  5. It belongs in a real home

Discreet, well made and good-looking. Safety shouldn't make your home look like a hardware store.

  6. It's honestly described

We tell you what it does, what it doesn't, and who it's for.

  7. It's recall-checked

We check CPSC and NHTSA recall lists before we stock a product, and keep checking while we sell it.

What we won't sell

Some products are popular, cheap and easy to find. That doesn't make them safe.

  • Padded crib bumpers and inclined infant sleepers

Both are banned under the federal Safe Sleep for Babies Act of 2022.

  • Infant sleep positioners and wedges

The FDA and CPSC warn against them.

  • Aftermarket car-seat inserts and strap covers

Unless they were crash-tested with your seat, they can change how it performs.

  • Small plug-in outlet caps

Kids can pry them out and put them in their mouths. We stock self-closing outlet covers instead.

  • Pressure-mounted gates sold for the top of the stairs

At the top, only a gate that screws into the wall will do.

  • Unbranded copies of certified products

We buy from manufacturers and authorized distributors.

If we wouldn't use it with our own family, it doesn't go in the shop.

How we choose, step by step

Numbers worth knowing

Small steps. Big difference.

Our story

Family first. Always.

Keeping your family safe shouldn't mean scrolling through thousands of look-alike listings, decoding mystery brands, or guessing what really matters.

We started Safety's R Us to be the shop we wished existed: a short, trustworthy list of home and car safety products, chosen with care and explained in plain English. Every product here is one we'd be glad to have in our own homes and cars.

Because when it comes to the people you love, good enough isn't.

Help

Questions families ask us.

Straight answers, in plain English. Can't find yours? Ask a real person.

Choosing the right products

How do you choose what to sell?

Slowly. Every product has to pass our Family First Standard. It must meet the safety standard that applies to it, be easy for adults and hard for kids, install without a contractor, be built to last and look right in a real home. If we wouldn't use it with our own family, we don't sell it.

I'm overwhelmed. What should I buy first?

Start with the Family First Five: smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, a fire extinguisher and fire blanket, a first aid kit, and a car emergency kit. Then take the 2-minute Safety Check, and we'll build a room-by-room list for your family's stage.

Which baby gate do I need?

At the top of the stairs, always use a hardware-mounted gate that screws into the wall. A pressure-mounted gate can be pushed loose. Pressure-mounted gates are great for doorways and the bottom of the stairs. Not sure? Send us a photo of your stairs and we'll recommend one.

Are your products renter-friendly?

Many are. Look for the No-drill badge: those products install with adhesive, tension or straps and come off cleanly. See every no-drill product.

Orders and help

Where do you ship, and how long does it take?

We ship across the contiguous U.S. Orders leave within 1–2 business days and usually arrive within 3–7 business days. Shipping is free on orders over $75.

What's your return policy?

You can return unused items in their original packaging within 30 days for a full refund. For hygiene and safety reasons, we can't take back opened first aid supplies or adhesive items that have been installed, unless they're faulty. How to start a return.

Is checkout secure?

This preview store doesn't take payments. You can walk through checkout, but no card details are collected and nothing is charged or shipped.

Is Safety's R Us an emergency service?
