Placement guide
Where the alarms go.
Most homes have alarms. Fewer have them in the right places. Here's the layout fire safety experts recommend, drawn on a two-story house. Point at a rule to find it on the drawing.
- Smoke alarm
- Carbon monoxide alarm
- Combination smoke + CO
- 1
Inside every bedroom
A smoke alarm in each room where someone sleeps, on the ceiling or high on the wall.
- 2
Outside each sleeping area
In the hallway outside the bedrooms. This is where a combination smoke + CO alarm earns its place.
- 3
On every level, basement included
One on each floor, near the stairs, so smoke rising up the stairway is caught early.
- 4
Near the door from the garage
An attached garage is a common source of carbon monoxide. Put a CO alarm in the room it opens into.
- 5
About 10 feet from the stove
Close enough to protect the kitchen, far enough that toast doesn't set it off.
Placement follows NFPA guidance. Hardwired alarms should be installed by a licensed electrician.

Which gate where?
One staircase, three answers.
The most common mistake we see is a pressure-mounted gate at the top of the stairs. Here's what goes where.
- 1
Top of the stairs
Only a gate that screws into the wall or banister. It swings away from the stairs and has no bar to trip over on the way down.
- 2
Bottom of the stairs and doorways
A pressure-mounted gate is fine here: if it's pushed loose, nobody falls down a flight of stairs.
- 3
Railings with wide gaps
If a child's head could fit between the balusters (wider than about 4 inches), add a clear guard along the rail.
3 products
Windows & doors
Windows that open 4 inches and no further, doors that don't close on fingers, and a chime when the door to the pool or the street opens.
Screens keep bugs out, not children in. Never count on a screen to stop a fall.
