Shop by world
Your family spends most of its time in two places: at home and on the road. We've hand-picked what matters in both.

Home Safety
Childproofing that works without wrecking your cabinets. Alarms that keep watch while you sleep. And the emergency basics every home should have.

Car & Travel Safety
Roadside kits for the trunk, rescue tools within the driver's reach, first aid for the glovebox, and thoughtful extras for your smallest passengers.

Every family's list is different. These five belong on all of them. Tick what you already have, and we'll show you what's left.
All five, one box
Family First Starter Kit $379
Two smoke + CO alarms, an extinguisher, a fire blanket, first aid kits for home and car, and a roadside kit.

Put one inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every floor. Test them monthly and replace them every 10 years.

CO has no color and no smell, so an alarm is the only way to know it's there. Put one outside each sleeping area and on every level, especially if you have gas appliances or an attached garage.

Keep an extinguisher on every floor and one near the kitchen, with a fire blanket by the stove. Learn P.A.S.S. (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) before you need it. Extinguishers are for small fires only: if in doubt, get out and call 911.

Keep one at home and one in the car, and make sure everyone knows where they are. Check both twice a year.

It needs a light, warning triangles, first aid, a blanket and a way to jump-start the battery, plus a seat belt cutter the driver can reach.
Home Safety
Every room has its own hazards. Pick a room to see what matters there, and what we'd put in it. It's the same house you saw at the top of the page.
Tap a room on the plan. Numbers mark what to watch for.
Ground floor
The heart of the home, and the room with the most within reach.
Never put water on a grease fire. Turn off the heat and smother it with a lid or a fire blanket.
Ground floor
Where everyone gathers, and where little ones explore.
Anchor TVs and heavy furniture to the wall, even if they feel sturdy. A climbing child changes the math.
Both floors
To a new walker, every stair is an adventure.
At the top of the stairs, always use a hardware-mounted gate. A pressure-mounted gate can be pushed loose.
Upstairs
Calm, cozy, and secured before they can climb.
Keep the crib bare: a firm, flat mattress and a fitted sheet, with no bumpers, pillows or blankets. Place it away from windows and cords.
Upstairs
Everyone sleeps here, so this is where alarms matter most.
Every bedroom needs two ways out. On an upper floor, an escape ladder is the second one.
Both floors
Water, medicine and slippery surfaces, all in one small room.
Set your water heater to 120°F (49°C) or lower to help prevent scalds. Never leave a child alone in the bath, even for a moment.
Every room
Fresh air in, little ones safely inside.
Screens keep bugs out, not children in. Window stops that keep openings to 4 inches or less help prevent falls.
Ground floor
The easiest room to forget, and full of things to keep out of reach.
Keep laundry pods sealed, up high and out of sight. To a toddler, they look like candy.
Outside
Summer's best moments, with someone always watching the water.
Whenever kids are near water, name a Water Watcher: one adult, phone down, eyes on the water. Take turns.
Car & Travel Safety
A safe trip starts before you turn the key. Pick a trip to see what belongs in your car. Watch the signs light up as the headlights pass.
Short drives, busy mornings, little passengers.
Make “look before you lock” a habit. Put your bag or phone in the back seat so you always check.
More miles, fewer surprises.
Before you set off, check tire pressure (spare included) while the tires are cold.
Be seen, stay safe, get going.
Turn on your hazard lights, get as far from traffic as you safely can, and set triangles out behind the car.
Cold starts, short days, snowy shoulders.
Keep your tank at least half full, and keep the winter kit in the car, not the garage.
Send them off prepared, not just licensed.
Talk through what to do after a crash before one ever happens. Then keep the plan in the glovebox.
Hotels, rentals and Grandma's house.
Do a five-minute sweep when you arrive: windows, cords, outlets, medicines and pool access.

How we choose
Big marketplaces list thousands of look-alike gates, locks and alarms, with no easy way to tell which meet safety standards. We do that homework for you, and we say no to most of what we see.
Inspection tag
UL-listed smoke and CO alarms. ASTM- and JPMA-certified gates. U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets. If a standard exists, we require it.
Child-resistant shouldn't mean parent-proof.
Clear instructions and the right hardware in the box. No contractor needed, hardwired alarms excepted.
Sturdy materials that hold up to years of daily use and determined toddlers.
Discreet, well made and good-looking. Safety shouldn't make your home look like a hardware store.
We tell you what it does, what it doesn't, and who it's for.
We check CPSC and NHTSA recall lists before we stock a product, and keep checking while we sell it.
Checked bySafety's R UsPassed
Some products are popular, cheap and easy to find. That doesn't make them safe.
Both are banned under the federal Safe Sleep for Babies Act of 2022.
The FDA and CPSC warn against them.
Unless they were crash-tested with your seat, they can change how it performs.
Kids can pry them out and put them in their mouths. We stock self-closing outlet covers instead.
At the top, only a gate that screws into the wall will do.
We buy from manufacturers and authorized distributors.
If we wouldn't use it with our own family, it doesn't go in the shop.

Help
Straight answers, in plain English. Can't find yours? Ask a real person.
Slowly. Every product has to pass our Family First Standard. It must meet the safety standard that applies to it, be easy for adults and hard for kids, install without a contractor, be built to last and look right in a real home. If we wouldn't use it with our own family, we don't sell it.
Start with the Family First Five: smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, a fire extinguisher and fire blanket, a first aid kit, and a car emergency kit. Then take the 2-minute Safety Check, and we'll build a room-by-room list for your family's stage.
At the top of the stairs, always use a hardware-mounted gate that screws into the wall. A pressure-mounted gate can be pushed loose. Pressure-mounted gates are great for doorways and the bottom of the stairs. Not sure? Send us a photo of your stairs and we'll recommend one.
Many are. Look for the No-drill badge: those products install with adhesive, tension or straps and come off cleanly. See every no-drill product.
We ship across the contiguous U.S. Orders leave within 1–2 business days and usually arrive within 3–7 business days. Shipping is free on orders over $75.
You can return unused items in their original packaging within 30 days for a full refund. For hygiene and safety reasons, we can't take back opened first aid supplies or adhesive items that have been installed, unless they're faulty. How to start a return.
